Kundrathur sits at the western edge of the Chennai Metropolitan Area in Kancheepuram district, and is the headquarters of its own taluk. Its name comes from the Tamil word for hill, "kundru," and the town is best known for its temples rather than for offices: the Kundrathur Murugan Temple, unusual for facing Lord Muruga north, is one of the more visited shrines in the region, alongside the Thiruvooraga Perumal and Nageshwarar temples. Kundrathur is also recorded as the birthplace of the poet-saint Sekkizhar, author of the Periyapuranam, and locals sometimes call it Chennai's "temple city."
This is a genuinely different pitch from OMR or Porur: Kundrathur is chosen mainly for its price and its quiet, residential, semi-rural character, not for a walk to an IT campus. It sits on the Pallavaram–Kundrathur–Poonamallee Road, which links it east towards Porur and Pallavaram and north towards Poonamallee and the NH4 (Mount-Poonamallee Road) corridor.
